Before General Anesthesia

Before your dental surgery, we want to ensure you feel comfortable and informed. During your pre-operative appointment, feel free to share any concerns or fears you may have. Our priority is to create a secure environment for you on the day of surgery, and your communication helps us accommodate your needs more effectively. Here are some guidelines to help you prepare:

Leading Up to the Day of Surgery:

  • Fasting should start at midnight before surgery if your appointment is in the morning. For afternoon appointments, avoid eating for 8 hours before your scheduled surgery.

  • While fasting, you may drink only clear fluids such as water, apple juice, black coffee, and sports drinks. Avoid alcohol, orange juice, milk, creamer, and other opaque drinks. Stop drinking all fluids 6 hours before surgery. If you're unsure about what's allowed, ask during your pre-operative appointment.

  • You may continue taking certain medications with a small sip of water before surgery, including cardiac medications, pulmonary medications, steroids, anti-seizure medications, and anti-Parkinson's medications. However, refrain from taking MAO inhibitors, anti-depressants, aspirin, anti-coagulants, and anti-inflammatory drugs at least two days before surgery to prevent complications.

  • Avoid consuming alcohol or using tobacco products 24 hours before and after your appointment.

Day of Surgery:

  • Minors must have a parent or guardian present during surgery. All patients need a licensed driver to take them home after the appointment, and we recommend having someone accompany you for at least 12 hours afterward.

  • Brush your teeth as usual, but be careful not to swallow water or toothpaste. Avoid wearing makeup or nail polish.

  • Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures before surgery.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes, ideally with shirts that have ¾ sleeves or shorter.

  • After surgery, you may not be fully aware, so avoid work, school, driving, or using hazardous devices. Ensure you have assistance with tasks like climbing stairs.

  • If you experience any health changes on the morning of your appointment, especially symptoms like a cold or fever with chest and sinus congestion, contact our practice immediately. We may need to reschedule your appointment for safety reasons.
